Stags set for finals season
Rugby League: The Nanango Stags continued their winning streak on Saturday, defeating the Wondai Wolves 26 to 16 in Wondai.
Stags coach Joel Smallwood said although the team was down a few players, he was proud of how the boys performed.
"It went alright for what we had, we had about 15 players,” he said.
"It was a sort of dead game for us as some players were worried about getting injured before the finals.
"As we were under-strength I wasn't too worried about whether we won or lost.”
Smallwood said there were some players who did not normally play much who ended up playing the full game.
"It was a gutsy effort the boys put in,” he said.
"Six of them from the run-on side played, and they don't normally play even 30 minutes in a game, but most of them played 60 to 70 minutes because they had too.”
Nanango will go on to play the Kingaroy Red Ants in Cherbourg next week.
"It's the knock-out semi-final,” Smallwood said.
"If our boys turn up to play, we will be a very hard team to beat.
"As you can see in the last three games, we've knocked off the other teams in the finals.”
He said the team would train throughout the week.
