Stags too strong for hosts

Rugby League: The Nanango Stags recorded their first win of the South Burnett Rugby League season with a 30-24 victory over Wondai Wolves at the weekend.

Following last week's last-second draw, the Stags were full of confidence travelling to Wondai but knew nothing short of their best football would be enough to leave with the competition points.

When the Wolves crossed relatively easily in the opening exchanges it looked like the Stags might be in for a long day at the office, but they responded in-kind to level proceedings inside 15 minutes.

From there it was a try-for-try affair, but the Stags showed class when it counted to run over their hosts on their way to the win.

Nanango player-coach Joel Smallwood said it was important his side tallied their first win of the season ahead of this weekend's bye.

"It was a good way to get our first win of the season,” Smallwood said.

"We have the bye this week before we play Murgon in Murgon. That'll show us where we're at as a side, for sure.”

Halfback Blake Harvey returned to play a pivotal role in the kicking game, while first-gamer Jamie Ballinger impressed at fullback.

"It was a team effort, but I think Jamie played really well for his first game of the season,” Smallwood said.

"We have a very young side - I think 10 or 11 of our players on the weekend were under 20, so we still have a lot of learning to do.

"We can get ball and try happy, but once we get that under control we'll be all right.”
