Star called out for tiny tip after multi-million dollar deal
IT was supposed to be one of the biggest days of NBA star Andre Roberson's life.
It ended with him becoming a social media punch line.
The Oklahoma City Thunder star is still celebrating his newly signed $30 million three-year, but the shine has been taken off by a single tweet from a rather unimpressed waiter.
The 25-year-old signed a new deal with the OKC after a breakthrough defensive season where he was recognised with selection in the NBA All-Defensive team for the 2016-17 season.
With the ink still drying on the contract, leaked information saw the story of Roberson's new deal break before his team had the opportunity to confirm it.
His retention in Oklahoma is another strong move from the franchise which only last week landed the signature of Indiana Pacers star Paul George.
The small forward had plenty of things to be celebrating - until the simple act of paying a cheque landed him in the bad books of many NBA fans on social media.
After his deal was officially submitted to the NBA on Wednesday (local time), Roberson reportedly went celebrating with 12 friends at a bar in Austin, Texas.
TMZ Sports reports Roberson and his friends spent time in the Chupacabra Cantina where they racked up a $487.13 bar tab
The group reportedly enjoyed their time - drinking Long Island iced teas and vodka red bull mixes, but Roberson has denied this, claiming he only ordered one bottle.
Things got awkward for the rising star when it came time to pay the cheque - and he coughed up for a services tip of just $13.97 - that's a tip of just 2.8%. Anything under 10% is normally enough to get you branded a cheapskate.
It just isn't a good look for a man who has just penned a $30 million deal.
His waiter wasn't about to let him get away with what he believes was a "trash" move.
He took a photo of Roberson's bill and posted it online where it immediately went viral.
It wasn't just the lowball tip that saw Roberson attract the wrath of NBA fans - he also messed up his maths on the tip when trying to square off his bill at a clean $500 mark.
His tip of $13.97 actually took his total bill to $501.10 - which means he actually only paid a tip of $12.87.
Roberson did have his own side of the story, which in part explains his behaviour, but not his poor mathematics.
According to reports it's not even the worst mathematics error Roberson has committed recently.
12 months ago he reportedly knocked back a four-year contract with the Thunder worth $48 million. He knocked it back believing he would be able to impress Thunder officials enough to make the franchise increase their offer.
However, a poor season at the offensive end, where he averaged just 6.6 points per game, while shooting at 46.4% from the field, saw his offer slashed.
For those doing the maths at home, it means Roberson's new deal is exactly $18 million less than the one he turned down 12 months ago.
Shouldn't have had to tip you it was just a bottle at a bar ...there was no service ..now I can see if it was a club! You Reaching bro— Andre Roberson (@FlyDre21) July 6, 2017
Don't ever say maths isn't important.
