State of Origin NSW player ratings for game one
RATINGS for NSW
1. Jarryd Hayne - 8.
Brilliant in attack and defence. Scored crucial first try and always seemed to be there at the back to thwart the Maroons' attack.
Powerful ball-running and shrugged off many defenders through his upper body strength.
2. Brett Morris - 6.
Solid but unspectacular game. Kick chase was good.
3. Michael Jennings - 7 ½
Threatened to poke his nose through the Queensland defence on more than one occasion. Scored a great try with outstanding footwork and guile.
4. Josh Morris - 6 ½
His trysaver on Darius Boyd in the first half was a beauty.
5. Blake Ferguson - 6 ½
Peppered by the high ball and, despite an early blemish, held his ground well on debut.
6. James Maloney - 7
Kicked and ran well all night. Very composed on debut.
7. Mitchell Pearce - 7
Good involvement in Hayne's try and some lovely short passing, almost putting Luke Lewis over for a try after 49 minutes.
8. Paul Gallen - 7 ½
Typical captain's knock from a tireless and battered back rower who was thrust into the front-rowers' furnace.
9. Robbie Farah - 71/2
Some good kicks earned the Blues some repeat sets - something they struggled to earn last year.
10. James Tamou - 6
Careless dropped ball early, but recovered nicely after that.
11. Ryan Hoffman - 6
Some solid left-edge running.
12. Luke Lewis - 8 ½
Simply outstanding. Never lets the Blues down at this level. Fantastic footwork and always a threat with ball in hand.
13. Greg Bird - 8
The real engine of the Blues' defence. Came off his line all night to whack the Maroons forwards and force errors.
14. Andrew Fifita - 5
Didn't have to get too involved with his fellow forwards on fire.
15. Trent Merrin - 5 ½
Took his impressive offloading skills to the Origin arena when on the field.
16. Josh Reynolds - N/A
17. Anthony Watmough - 6
Nice early involvement, footwork and offloading as usual from the Manly firebrand.
