Subaru to recall 76,000 vehicles to replace airbags

SUBARU is the latest manufacturer to announce a widespread recall, with nearly 76,000 vehicles requiring airbag replacement.

The Subaru vehicles being recalled include the Tribeca model year 2007-2009, Liberty MY 2004-2009 and the Outback MY 2004-2009.

Issues with the vehicles relate to the passenger's front airbag which will be replaced at no cost to the owner.

The recall is part of the debacle surrounding faulty Takata airbags, which have required tens of millions to be replaced worldwide. The faulty airbags have been linked to at least 10 deaths and more than 100 injuries in the United States.

Information announced with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said "inflator propellant wafers may have an increased potential for moisture intrusion over time".

That moisture intrusion could potentially make the inflator assembly more susceptible to rupture during airbag deployment. The ruptured inflator may create metallic fragments during deployment that could contact an occupant, increasing the risk of injury.

If your Liberty, Outback or Tribeca are in the affected MY range, you can phone Subaru on 1300 550 994 to check whether your vehicle is affected.

Owners will be contacted by mail as soon as parts are available.
