Surfer and fisherman come to blows over stray hook
A photographer busy snapping photos of the Gold Coast skyline has captured a volatile moment between an angry surfer and a fisherman at The Spit.
The photographer, who did not want to be identified except by his Instagram account name, "samseaz", said the surprise incident occurred just before Christmas.
He said the surfer was in whitewash when a fishing line hook caught his finger and he became visibly upset.
"He gave the guy the bird, he was an angry dude, angry surfer guy," he said.
"He cut the line with his teeth and stormed up the beach."
He said that the man fishing was oblivious to what happened, and was intimidated when the surfer confronted him on the Spit jetty.
The photographer said after the two had engaged in some pushing and shoving, the fisherman suddenly pulled out what looked to be a blade or a pair of scissors.
Although the fisherman swiped at the surfer, it is believed the weapon did not touch him.
However, the surfer managed to punch the fisherman in the face before the pair were finally broken up.
"Looks like maybe his wife intervened, but they arced up again ... so others intervened," he said.
"Old mate then walked away, while the other guy continued fishing."
"If the current pushes the fishing line out, who's at fault?" he said.
