Technology is breaking down barriers for Carmen

COMMUNICATION was never easy between Jenny Clauss and her daughter, Carmen Burnett.

Carmen was born with Angelman syndrome, a rare disorder that causes developmental delays and robs her of the ability to speak.

But although Carmen has never spoken, a new touchpad is giving her a voice.

If Carmen is hungry, she can press an icon on her touchpad and a voice will say "I'm hungry".

"There's endless possibilities, you can customise it," Jenny said.

Even simple tasks that most people take for granted, like ordering a meal are now possible thanks to the device.

"She can now order what she likes," she said.

With help she can now buy her own groceries and even do the banking.

"She's still learning all the things she can do with it," Jenny said.
