The mullet overshadowing one of sport's biggest teams

WE'VE heard of celebrities insuring body parts for millions of dollars, but can a hairstyle really be worth more than a house?

Heidi Klum has insured her legs, Madonna her breasts and Jennifer Lopez her backside. College football coach Mike Gundy isn't about to go down the same route (we think) but that doesn't mean his hair isn't valuable.

Gundy - head coach at Oklahoma State - turned up before the 2016 season sporting a mullet. His flowing locks later became known as the "Arkansas Waterfall" and, as the mullet became an icon on the college football scene, Gundy continued to give the people what they wanted. He kept rocking the style in 2017 - a look he pulled off with some assistance.

"Well it's a little bit of butch wax, and you're right, you've got gotta have good genes, you've gotta have great hair and you've got to make sure you have the right product," Gundy told ESPN earlier this year.

"And as you know ... there's a lot of pressure when you have hair like this. You've got to make sure it looks right."

The cameras certainly thought the mullet was looking right as Gundy's follicles ensured his team received plenty of media attention. But in July, out came the scissors. It wasn't gone for good but it was trimmed. The mullet was slightly less glorious than before.

"My concern for it now is that it becomes a bigger deal than our team. That's what I don't want," Gundy said.

"There's some dilemma of actually what to do. But once we get closer to August, I don't want to take away from our team."

He may be worried about taking the spotlight off his troops but Gundy still reckons his hair did some good. At a media day this week, he said the amount of publicity generated from the mop on top of his head had been worth millions of dollars.

"I'm going to say that the dollar figure is somewhere in the millions for the amount of time that we've had on the air for that," Gundy told AL.com.

"We need to get our brand out there at Oklahoma State. If you look back it, you say, 'What did you get out of it?' Well, OK, all of that happened at a time when nobody was talking about Oklahoma State football. Nobody was talking about college football, but our brand was out there all across the country."

We can understand any barbers being a little nervous before taking hold of some clippers with Gundy in the chair. Who'd want to be blamed for ruining a million-dollar look?

Gundy is in his 13th year in charge of Oklahoma and has led his team to two titles.
