'Very stupid or couldn't care less': Dad cops $1550 fine
A "STUPID” decision to drive his car around the block after trying to fix it landed a 28-year-old single father in court.
John Luke Hoghes faced Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Monday charged with driving his unregistered, uninsured and defective Holden sedan on Youngman St while his licence was suspended at 10.45am on Mach 10.
Defence lawyer Chris Campbell said Hoghes recognised he had made a "very stupid decision to drive the vehicle”.
However, Magistrate Louisa Pink said his eight pages of traffic history and four convictions of unlicensed driving in fives years showed his attitude towards the law.
"You know from your history, you have breached the law many times, that you were either very stupid or couldn't care less,” Ms Pink said.
"It does paint the picture of someone who doesn't comply with the the law.”
Hoghes also faced the court for failing to report to Tara Police Station as part of his bail conditions, once a week from March 25 to May 13.
He did not report until 4pm on June 28 due to being sick.
Ms Pink said Hoghes had a "lengthy criminal history” for breaching bail by failing to appear.
"As long as you continue not to comply with the law you will suffer, as in this case, with significant fines,” she said.
Hoghes was suspended and fined $400 for driving while suspended, and disqualified from holding a driver's licence for one month.
For breaching bail conditions from March 25 to May 13, he was fined $500, for driving while uninsured he was fined $520, and for driving a defective vehicle he was fined $130.
"I am sure that you are tallying it up and you know that you have been fined a significant amount of over $1500,” Ms Pink said.
For driving unregistered and breaching bail on June 28 he was convicted and not further punished.
