Wage war on weeds to help free one of Kingaroy's hidden gems
THREE South Burnett community groups are joining forces to get their hands dirty and Free the Trees in Kingaroy Carroll Park Nature Reserve ahead of National Tree Day on July 28.
Bunya Valley Landcare, the Kingaroy branch of Native Plants Queensland and South Burnett Field Naturalists are organising Free the Tree Day on Saturday, July 20, and are calling for more green thumbs to get involved in the weed-busting event.
Bunya Valley Landcare's Angela Griffiths said the Carroll Park Nature Reserve was a special place in Kingaroy.
"It is a gem in this town,” Ms Griffiths said.
"It really is the most beautiful dry rainforest. Not many people know about it which is a little sad.
"The vegetation is unique and is mostly soft wood scrub, which creates extremely fertile soil.
"It's also a biodiversity hotspot, right here in the middle of town.”
The problem is the nature reserve is being suffocated by invasive weeds.
"The problem weeds are the asparagus fern, cats claw, and basket asparagus,” Ms Griffiths said.
"They are smothering the trees and shrubs and restricting movement for the smaller birds and animals.
"The weeds have become the dominant ground cover and are displacing the native plants too.”
That's where the Free the Tree Day comes in.
"It is our intention to manually remove these vines and other invasive weeds, all while getting a good dose of nature,” Ms Griffiths said.
"We will not be using any chemical weed killers for health and safety reasons. We will provide a few mattocks for the day though.
"Removing these weeds is usually a matter of one or two swings of the mattock to remove the root ball.
"We will offer a short demonstration in the morning to help with identifying the non-native invasive weeds and then techniques for removing them.”
The event will start at 8.30am at the Kingaroy Carroll Park Nature Reserve.
If you're keen to go along it would be a good idea to bring:
- Thick gloves
- Protective clothing
- Covered shoes
- Favourite mattock
- Bucket for seeds and bulbs
- Chair (if you need one).
