Whincup has last laugh in Gold Coast 600

MOTORSPORT: Red Bull Racing Holden drivers Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell survived a late charge from teammate Shane van Gisbergen to claim the Gold Coast 600 race.

Van Gisbergen, the Supercars drivers championship leader, had to double stack early in the race and dropped down the order but roared back with a superb drive to put the pressure on his series rival in the dying stages on the Surfers Paradise circuit.

But a warning from race control for overuse of curbs meant the 27-year-old Kiwi risked a drive-through penalty if he infringed once more.

It left six-time Supercars series winner Whincup to score his 101st career victory with a 9.079-second margin over van Gisbergen - and put behind him a controversial aftermath to the Bathurst 1000, when he was hit with a 15-second time penalty and then had his appeal thrown out.

"I was a co-driver today,” Whincup said, paying tribute to his co-driver Dumbrell. "PD did 60 laps at the start that set the race up and I just finished it off.”

It marked the first endurance race win for Whincup and Dumbrell in two years after a series of near-misses.

With a healthy championship lead (148 points) and the Pirtek Endurance Cup as the top driver of the weekend safely under control after his win in race one on Saturday, van Gisbergen settled for second place and another big haul of valuable points with just two rounds remaining - the next on his home turf in New Zealand on November 5-6.

"Pretty cool,” he said of the result. "(But) we did that the hard way again.

"A great weekend - a first and a second and the Pirtek Endurance Cup as well.”

Scott McLaughlin also charged through in the final stint after going off-sequence on strategy to take his second podium in as many days alongside David Wall.

Craig Lowndes/Steven Richards, Mark Winterbottom/Dean Canto and Chaz Mostert/Steve Owen completed the top six.
