YOUR SAY: We can’t afford to lose our dairy farmers
SOUTH Burnett Times readers were outraged to hear many dairy farmers were still struggling as the industry struggles to secure a fair milk price.
Coolabunia dairy farmer Damien Tessmann shared in our recent story how many farmers were leaving the industry as they struggled to make ends meet.
This comes as a senate investigation into Australia's dairy industry since deregulation in 2000 was secured last week, with a report due by March 2020.
On Facebook, reader Julie Binnie said Australian dairy farmers offered the best produce.
"We can't afford to lose our dairy farmers," she said.
"The farmers certainly aren't being given enough money for their top quality produce.
"I think farmers deserve all the help we can give them, along with being paid the best price for their produce."
Reader Darren Bailey said it would take time for changes to be made through the political system.
"By the time anything gets done it will probably be too late," he said.
Mr Bailey said it was interesting how people overseas were willing to pay high prices for other dairy products.
"It makes you wonder who is making all of the money, because it is certainly not the producer," he said.
Mr Bailey said consumers should be conscious about which brands they by.
"I think the best hope lies in forming stronger producer-owned co-ops like Norco," he said.
"That will at least give them some power over the prices they receive."
Others like Jan Gardner Milbourn have already been shopping with dairy farmers in mind.
"I used to buy Woolies milk thinking I was donating towards our dairy farmers, sadly no it is not," she said.
"So now I buy Norco milk as it goes to the farmers."
Lib Jenkins has taken a similar approach to pledge her support.
"I'm at the stage that I don't buy milk because I'm not going to pay for anything but with the majority going to farmers," she said.
Reader Lyn Embrey said there were a few South Burnett dairies left.
"I don't know how they manage," she said.
"Few and far between, I lived on a dairy farm growing up.
"Everyone had a dairy around us."
